Update: Michael Drude, the Miller School of Albemarle’s Head of School, provided a statement to Cville Right Now following this morning’s structure fire.

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) — Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to a structure fire at The Miller School of Albemarle Wednesday morning, ACFR spokesperson Reagan Samuels told Cville Right Now.

Career and volunteer personnel were dispatched to the school at approximately 8:13 a.m. The first suppression apparatus arrived 11 minutes later. Smoke and flames were found showing from the roof of a building on the 950 block of Samuel Miller Loop.

Samuels said no students were in the school at the time. One adult was able to self-evacuate without injury.

Head of School Michael Drude said in a statement sent to Cville Right Now the fire occurred in the attic of a residential building, and the building’s fire suppression system limited the fire’s spread until emergency responders arrived.

Drude once again reiterated no one was injured in the accident.

Miller School is currently on summer break and not in regular session,” he said. “While a small summer program is operating on campus, the affected building is not connected to that program, and there was no impact on students.

One apartment unit sustained damage from fire, and others were unable to be occupied due to loss of power.

The School is making appropriate arrangements to temporarily relocate faculty and staff residents living in the building while damage is assessed and repairs are planned,” Drude said.

The cause of the fire was determined by the Albemarle Fire Marshal’s office to be a mechanical failure with an attic vent fan.
