CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Former Hollymead Elementary School staffer Michael Swiney, who is facing 11 felony charges related to allegations he committed sex crimes involving children, will make his next appearance in Albemarle Circuit Court next Monday at 9 a.m. for a status hearing.

Swiney was arrested in early June and has been held at Albemarle-Charlottesville Regional Jail since. He is facing seven counts of aggravated sexual battery, one count of attempted aggravated sexual battery and three counts of indecent liberties.

His arrest last month triggered a wave of backlash against Albemarle County Public School and Hollymead administration. ACPS Superintendent Matthew Haas and Hollymead Principal Joe McCauley both resigned within a matter of weeks, and the division is preparing to conduct an independent investigation at the behest of families, as well as politicians like Rep. John McGuire, State Sen. Creigh Deeds, and Delegates Katrina Callsen and Amy Laufer.

The school board will be holding a special meeting to discuss the parameters of the investigation of Tuesday at 10 a.m.

Swiney’s trial has been set less than a week after former Woodbrook Elementary teacher Nicholas Clark, who is facing two counts of possession of child pornography, made his last court appearance on Tuesday. He plans to plead guilty, with his next appearance set for Aug. 27 at 3 p.m.
