CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – With a second suspect being sought now in the June 14 Downtown Mall shooting, and still no one named in the July 7th one, Police Chief Mike Kochis told City Council this week they’re going to beef up patrols especially Friday and Saturday nights.

“A lot of individuals carrying firearms, in establishments, drinking alcohol, some look like they may be overcrowded, and when they empty out around 1:30 or 1:40AM, emotions run high and if you have firearms, we’ve seen what’s happened,” Kochis told Council.

He says CPD will work with Virginia ABC to determine, with business owners, about possible security measures they can take. He says he doesn’t know any answers now but will meet with business leaders in a couple of weeks after this process is complete.

“So we can work together,” Kochis said.

After Kochis talked about getting ABC involved, Councilor Natalie Oschrin noted about ten years ago when the state agents became overly aggressive at the Barracks Road Shopping Center with some UVA students outside the Harris Teeter, and a UVA student at The Corner.

“I just want to put the notice out that we remember that and we want to make sure that they’re being careful and fair,” Oschrin said.

“Absolutely,” Kochis responded.
