CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Charlottesville Police have a video showing a suspect setting two fires at the Free Bridge encampment Wednesday night, and they’re hoping that the public can help identify the perpetrator.

In the 1:25 video taken by security surveillance cameras at 11:03 p.m. Wednesday, a person is seen walking down the Rivanna River Trail, apparently wearing a hooded sweatshirt, shorts and sandals. The suspect turns right off the trail into a campsite and uses his right hand to apparently light a tent on fire with a lighter. The suspect then walks further down the trail before, after 18 seconds, returning, and lighting a second tent on fire.

CPD is working with the fire marshal’s office to investigate the fires.

City officials cleared residents from the encampment along the Rivanna River Trail on Tuesday, but many tents and other personal belongings still remain.

Charlottesville City Spokesperson Afton Schneider confirmed to Cville Right Now that both the Charlottesville Police and Fire Departments responded to the fires and the incident is being investigated by the fire marshal’s office.

A person who told Cville Right Now on Thursday morning that they witnessed the fires burning estimated they occurred at about 11 p.m. Wednesday. That would have been about two hours after city officials and staff left the area, City Councilor Jen Fleisher told Cville Right Now.
