CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia will host Richmond in a men’s basketball exhibition on Oct. 9 at John Paul Jones Arena, the school announced Thursday.

The game will tip-off at 7 p.m.

The game will be the second of two exhibitions the Cavaliers play. They are scheduled to face Vanderbilt in an outdoor game at Credit One Stadium in Charleston, S.C., on Sept. 27.

Virginia, in its second season under Ryan Odom, hasn’t officially released its full schedule yet. It hosts Drexel on Nov. 3, plays Arkansas in Washington D.C. on Nov. 8, and visits Maryland on Nov. 13 before playing a pair of games at the Battle 4 Atlantis in the Bahamas. The Cavaliers also have announced games against Kentucky on Dec. 2 at JPJ, part of the ACC/SEC Challenge, and Connecticut on Dec. 20 at Madison Square Garden in New York.

Richmond is also playing an exhibition game against James Madison. JMU coach Preston Spradlin, whose team has an exhibition scheduled against VCU, said he wants to see in-state schools use the exhibitions as a chance to play each other.

“I know the fans, their fans and ours, they’d like us to play each other, but just the way the NET rankings are and the conference demands, it’s just really difficult to get those games on the schedule,” Spradlin said. “So all of us kind of joined together to say, ‘Hey, there’s an opportunity for us to play and it’s great for our teams. It’s great for our fans, so let’s do it.'”

Spradlin emphasized that even the games are exhibitions, they will be played as regular games.

“We’re playing and the thing I don’t want is people to say, ‘Well, it’s an exhibition. It doesn’t count.’ We’re playing the game just like a regular game, and we’re playing it in our arenas.”
