RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The Virginia agency that processes unemployment benefits doesn’t expect to finish clearing its pandemic-related backlog until next summer. A top agency official gave that update to lawmakers at an oversight hearing in Richmond on Wednesday. Jeff Ryan of the Virginia Employment Commission says first-level appeals are the largest pressure point remaining, with an estimated 45,000 cases not expected to clear till July. Some lawmakers say they appreciate improvements the agency has made, but they continue to hear complaints from constituents. Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin campaigned on a pledge to improve how the employment agency functions.
