CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Albemarle County School Board and former Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas have finalized the terms of Haas’s resignation, the school division announced Saturday.
Haas will receive severance pay and benefits as specified for an employee resigning or being terminated without cause, according to the release.
“We appreciate the years of service and dedication Dr. Haas provided to Albemarle County throughout his career, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors,” School Board Chair Rebecca Berlin said in a statement.
Haas was asked to resign by the board on June 11, following public concerns about the division’s communication in the wake of the arrest of staffer Michael Swiney. Swiney is charged with 11 felonies, including seven counts of aggravated sexual battery, three counts of taking indecent liberties with a child and then one count of attempted aggravated sexual battery.
Hollymead principal Joe McCauley was placed on administrative leave last week.
Haas will receive his regular pay and benefits through June 2027. That includes his previously-agreed upon 3.75% raise to $257,165.67 starting on July 1 until his contract expires June 30, 2027. He will also receive an $800 bonus this month.
Last week, the school division announced that Dr. Chandra Hayes, Albemarle County’s Assistant Superintendent of Instruction, was taking over, effective immediately, as the division’s Acting Superintendent.
A search will be conducted for a permanent replacement for Haas.
