CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Severe thunderstorms postponed, and even cancelled, some Fourth of July late afternoon and early evening events and brought down trees and power lines generally along the I-64 corridor.

As of 9 p.m., more than 3,500 combined Dominion and CVEC customers were without power in Albemarle County, and some 8,100 Dominion customers were out in the City of Charlottesville, according to the companies.

Louisa and Fluvanna counties were also hit hard with more than 1000 Dominion and CVEC customers out in Louisa County, and 2,300 CVEC customers out in Fluvanna County.

“Severe thunderstorms with wind gusts near 75 m.p.h. and heavy lightning have impacted our area,” according to an alert by Dominion. “Our crews and support teams are working safely and as quickly as possible to restore power.”

Meanwhile, all three companies were advising to stay away from downed power lines and always assume they are live, and to report them to authorities.

Trees were reported down in all four localities.

“ACPD and Albemarle County Fire Rescue are responding to multiple calls for service around the County for downed trees and disabled vehicles,” Albemarle Police and Fire Tescue both posted on social media. “If you must travel, remember: never drive on flooded roads or around a barricade.”

The severe weather had cleared the area by around 9:15 p.m.

Lake Monticello cancelled its July 4 afternoon parade just before the storms hit, and Charlottesville Police reported postponement of Tonsler basketball league games until 8 p.m. The fireworks were slated to go at 9;30.

The Carter Mountain fireworks were also a go at 9:30 p.m.

Albemarle Fire Rescue reported a tree down into a structure around 5:15 p.m. on Maxfield Rd. in Keswick.

They also responded to five structure fires in about an hour period as the storms went through.
