CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Offensive coordinator Kevin Cassese will take over as the next men’s lacrosse coach at Virginia, the school announced Tuesday.
Cassese joined Lars Tiffany’s staff in 2024, after Sean Kirwan left to become the coach at Dartmouth.
Now, he replaces Tiffany, who went 108-51 in 10 seasons, winning national titles in 2019 and 2021. This year, UVA went 10-7, won an ACC tournament championship and lost in the first round of the NCAA tournament to Georgetown.
“This is a dream come true. UVA Men’s Lacrosse is a brotherhood built on a rich history, unbreakable bonds, and a passionate and persistent commitment to a championship standard unlike any other in our sport,” Cassese said in a statement. “The legends who have worn the orange and blue before us have set a bar of excellence that we will strive to honor every single day. I am humbled to lead this storied program and look forward to adding new chapters to its incredible legacy at Klöckner Stadium.”
Cassese was Lehigh’s coach from 2008-2023, going 136-104, leading the program to Patriot League titles three times. He also served as Duke’s interim head coach in 2006. Cassese played for the Blue Devils from 2000-2003, where he was a three-time All-American.
Tiffany reportedly agreed to a contract extension in March. Still, on May 18 the university announced a “leadership change” for the program.
“Kevin Cassese is the ideal leader, person and coach to usher in the next era of Virginia men’s lacrosse,” UVA AD Carla Williams said in a statement. “He embodies the integrity and competitive excellence that have defined this championship program for many decades.”
