CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Wingstop is landing in Charlottesville on Monday.
The fast-casual, made-to-order chicken wing restaurant is opening an outpost in the Rio Hills Center shopping center, taking over the location where Skrimp Shack closed last year.
Sunday night, the official Wingstop website still listed the restaurant at 1970 Rio Hill Center as “coming soon,” but signage on the storefront said the location opens Monday at 10 a.m., with “training in progress.” It will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 1 a.m.
According to a social media post from Make-A-Wish Greater Virginia, the location will open Monday and customers who make a $3 donation to the charitable organization through Friday can receive a free 6-piece combo meal.
The first Wingstop opened in Garland, Texas in 1994. It expanded into the franchising world in 1997 and now has over 2,500 locations worldwide. The nearest store to Charlottesville is the Culpeper location on James Madison Highway. Another is in Richmond.
Buffalo Wild Wings, one of Wingstop’s main competitors, has an Albemarle County restaurant off of Route 29 North, at Gander Drive, and opened a Buffalo Wild Wings Go location in Pantops in August.
Wingstop is one of a number of new restaurants set to open in the Albemarle-Charlottesville area in 2026. A new Peter Chang offering will occupy the space in Barracks where Peter Chang China Grill closed, and Shake Shack is moving into the former Burger Bach location in Stonefield.
