CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Augusta County Sheriff’s Office announced it has two men in custody in connection with a fatal shooting that occurred last Wednesday on Maple Leaf Drive in the Staunton area of Augusta County.
Agereon Dondell Price, 51, of Staunton, turned himself in and was arrested on Friday at approximately 5:23 p.m. Price was taken into custody on an outstanding warrant from the Fluvanna County Circuit Court for an unrelated drug conviction.
Anthony Shamon Washington, 46, of Waynesboro, turned himself in and was arrested on Sunday, at approximately 3:30 p.m.
Washington has been charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon in Augusta County, possession of a firearm while in possession of a controlled substance, possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance with intent to distribute, second offense, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. The latter three charges were all filed in Waynesboro.
Two males were shot. Andrew “AJ” Wayne Mitts Jr., 18, of Staunton, was killed. He was a senior at Buffalo Gap High School. His body was transported to the Chief Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke.
The second, a 19-year-old, was airlifted to the University of Virginia Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.
“This case is the result of swift investigative work and strong cooperation within our region. We remain committed to holding those involved accountable and ensuring the safety of our community. I would like to express my appreciation to Waynesboro and Staunton Police Departments as well as the U.S. Marshal’s Office for their assistance,” said Sheriff Donald L. Smith in a news release.
The investigation remains active, with additional charges forthcoming.
