CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia wrestling grabbed a hard-fought 28-9 victory on the road in Durham against Duke on Friday night.

Colton Washleski set the tone with an early decision, before Steven Burrell Jr and Dylan Newsome helped the Hoos to build an early lead.  The UVA win was sealed when Gable Porter won by tech fall against Raymond Atkins to clinch the victory before the final bout. 

The Cavaliers return to the mats for the Commonwealth Clash as Virginia Tech takes on UVA this Friday at 7:30 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

Tennis  

Both tennis squads started the weekend strong with home wins.  Only Thanaphat Boosarawongse on Columbia was able to notch a victory in singles competition against the No. 2 men’s squad on Friday night, and despite three tight losses in singles play, the No. 15 women’s team rode a doubles’ victory over the top to defeat Michigan 4-2.  

The Cavalier women then hit the road for a tough test against No. 10 Ohio State on Sunday, but were not able to earn a single win against the Buckeyes in the match, falling 4-0. That same day, Vanderbilt was bested by the men at home 6-1.  The men’s team will get its own chance to beat Ohio State in Columbus this Saturday, while the women’s team heads to National Team Indoors in Evanston, Ill., beginning Friday and ending Monday.   

Squash  

The men’s team took on No. 19 Western Ontario and swept them off the court 9-0 at a neutral site in Annapolis, Md. on Friday, with only one game dropped by the entire team throughout the match. One day later, the women’s team took down Georgetown 7-2 on the road.  Next for both teams, Virginia will be playing host to the MASC Conference Championships at the McArthur Squash Center beginning Feb .13.   

Basketball 

The No. 18 men’s team survived a double overtime scare on the road against Notre Dame this past Tuesday, winning 100-97 to put itself to get back in the win column.  They then hit the road again to face Boston College, winning 73-66 after a well-timed second half surge.  Back at home this week, the Hoos take on Pitt at 9 p.m. Tuesday night, and Syracuse at noon on Saturday.  

More Action 

Five track & field Hoos set marks that penetrated the all-time top tens of program history at the Brant Tolsma Invitational in Lynchburg, Va., this past weekend.  Headlining them was senior Henry Sullivan, who posted total of 5,414 points in the heptathalon, good for third all-time in program history, after first place finishes in the 60m hurdles and the pole vault. 

Virginia Women’s Golf also finished fourth in the Collegiate Invitational at the Guadalajara Country Club in Mexico.  The best shooter of the contest was Jaclyn LaHa, who notched joint-second place finishing at –3.
