CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Thijs DeRidder scored 17 points, Malik Thomas added 14 and No. 17 Virginia overcame another shaky first half and a dreadful 3-point shooting performance to rally past Boston College, 73-66, on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Chance Mallory added 11 points, 6 rebounds and 2 assists as UVA (18-3, 7-2 ACC) improved to 6-1 in true road games this season, winning for the seventh time in its last eight games. It won despite going 4 for 23 from 3-point range, a season-low for made treys.

Donald Hand Jr. scored 20 points to lead the Eagles, who got 17 from Fred Payne. But Virginia’s bench outscored BC’s 28-1, led by Mallory, Jacari White and Ugo Onyenso. White scored 8 and Onyenso had 7 points and 7 rebounds.

Like it did Tuesday night at Notre Dame, Virginia struggled in the first half. Boston College led by as many as seven and went to the locker room ahead 32-27.

UVA went 2 for 16 from beyond the 3-point arc in the first half, then wisely cutdown on its deep attempts after the break, going 2 for 7. Thomas was 0 for 5 on 3-pointers Saturday.

But the Cavaliers opened the second half outscoring BC 21-9 over the first 6:30 of play, building a 48-41 lead on a layup by Thomas.

Against the Irish, UVA had to erase a 19-point first-half deficit and needed two overtimes to pull out the victory in South Bend, Ind. In Chestnut Hill on Saturday, it took care of business in regulation, will Dallin Hall scoring 4 points in the final 3:17 to hold the Eagles at an arm’s length. It won against BC for the 16th time in the last 19 meetings between the teams.

The Cavaliers host Pittsburgh (9-13, 2-7) at 9 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.
