CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Malik Thomas scored 23 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and No. 16 Virginia knocked down 12 shots from beyond the arc to rally for a 72-68 win at Moody Coliseum in Dallas on Saturday.
Thijs DeRidder scored 17 points and had six rebounds for the Cavaliers (16-2, 5-1 ACC), who won their fifth straight.
Tied 68-68 with 1:07 to play, DeRidder knocked down four straight free throws and UVA didn’t allow the Mustangs to score.
Jaron Pierre Jr. led four SMU players in double figures with 16 points. The Mustangs were coming off a dramatic victory Wednesday night that saw Boopie Miller’s buzzer-beating, half-court heave down Virginia Tech, 77-76.
Devin Tillis scored 11 off the bench for UVA, going 3 for 5 from 3-point range. As a team, Virginia went 12 for 31 from behind the arc.
Its bench outscored SMU 26-13.
Virginia trailed by as many as seven in the first half, but went to the locker room up 40-37. It went ahead by seven, only to see the Mustangs tie things up 63-63 with 3:29 left. It outscored SMU 9-5 from there, with DeRidder scoring seven of those points.
The Cavaliers next game is Jan. 24 at home against No. 14 North Carolina. UVA will name the court for former coach Tony Bennett in a ceremony ahead of that game.
