CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Freshman point guard Chance Mallory scored 16 points and Virginia knocked down 12 3-pointers as it picked up the biggest win of the early season, winning at Texas 88-69 in the ACC/SEC Challenge.

Mallory led five Cavaliers who scored in double figures on Wednesday night. Johann Grunloh finished with 15 points, Thijs DeRidder scored 13, Malik Thomas had 11 and Jacari White added 10.

UVA (7-1) reached the 80-point plateau for the seventh time this season, and it’s won all seven of those games. It got 38 points from its bench.

Dailyn Swain led the Longhorns (5-3) with 15 points and 10 rebounds.

A year after getting rolled in the Challenge, 14-2, the ACC got off to a strong start on Tuesday. It went 6-3 on the first day, including marquee wins by Duke over Florida and North Carolina over Kentucky, and upsets of Tennessee by Syracuse and Missouri by Notre Dame. Virginia Tech also scored an overtime road win over South Carolina and Miami won at Ole Miss.

But things took a turn back on Wednesday, as the ACC went 1-6 with Virginia notching the lone victory.

The Cavaliers return to the court Saturday when they face Dayton in Charlotte.
