CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – J’Mari Taylor took a direct snap and ran in for a 2-yard touchdown to win it in overtime, 30-24, at Louisville on Saturday.
Taylor’s score was setup by a tough 7-yard run by quarterback Chandler Morris, who got the ball to the 2-yard line but was hit hard and had to exit the game for at least one play. It turned out to be the last one.
It’s the fifth straight meeting between the two teams that was decided a touchdown or less.
Virginia’s defense scored a pair of touchdowns and recorded five sacks, helping the Cavaliers win despite an off day for its record-setting offense.
Playing again without injured center Brady Wilson, UVA lost left tackle McKale Boley early in the game. It finished with its worst offensive outing of the season, mustering just 212 yards and one touchdown in regulation.
But in the overtime, Morris and that unit delivered.
Louisville had the ball first in overtime and settled for a 24-yard field goal.
On UVA’s possession, Morris ran for seven yards, getting the ball to the Cardinals’ 2-yard line and setting up Taylor’s winning run.
Louisville erased a 10-point deficit in the fourth quarter, tying the game with a 50-yard field goal with 1:08 to play.
For most of the game, Virginia’s defense was the story.
Cornerback Donovan Platt returned a fumble for a touchdown in the first quarter and linebacker Kam Robinson took an interception back for a third-quarter score.
Defensive end Mitchell Melton had two sacks as UVA followed up its upset of then-No. 8 Florida State with a key ACC road win that elevates the Cavaliers status as conference title game contenders.
Virginia opened the scoring when its defense made a big play in the first quarter. On fourth-and-1 at the Virginia 37-yard line, Moss pitched the ball to running back Isaac Brown, who fumbled. UVA corner Donovan Platt, the Army transfer, scooped it up and raced 61 yards for a touchdown and a 7-0 lead with 6:21 left in the opening quarter.
After Louisville tied the game, Virginia went ahead on a 19-yard touchdown pass from Morris to game Cam Ross, putting the Cavaliers ahead 14-7 with 6:56 left in the half.
The Cardinals knotted things up again, just 3:30 later, when Moss hit Bell for a 15-yard score. And they appeared poised to take the lead just before halftime, but a low snap doomed a field goal try with two seconds left. The teams went to the locker room tied 14-14.
UVA appeared to grab control of the game in the third quarter. First, linebacker Kam Robinson intercepted a Moss throw and ran it back 47 yards for the second Cavalier defensive touchdown of the day, putting Virginia on top 21-14 with 6:25 left in the quarter. Then, Will Bettridge added a 46-yard field goal with 30 seconds to play in the third.
That sent UVA to the final frame ahead 24-14.
But Louisville trimmed the margin to just three points when Moss hit Bell for a 13-yard touchdown with 9:41 left.
