CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Avian flu H1N5 has been found in poultry operations in Maryland and Delaware, and among birds at the Metro Richmond Zoo… but UVA Health infectious disease specialist Dr. Patrick Jackson says he’s worried about safety implications of the new Wawa opening on 5th Street more than bird flu. Same goes for an H5N9 strain found in a duck farm in California. Dr. Jackson says we’ve seen no sustained human-to-human transmission of bird flu, and that would be a big red flag that a pandemic could be starting. He says that could happen never or could happen tomorrow and we just don’t know. Dr. Jackson says we’ve known for some time H1N5 is widely distributed in wild bird populations, so it’s not surprising at all we’re finding it in birds closer to here.
