CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – Charlottesville City Schools (CCS) and Albemarle County Public Schools (ACPS) have issued statements addressing concerns about immigration enforcement and its potential impact on school communities.
Charlottesville City Schools Superintendent Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr. stated that the division is monitoring the situation and consulting with legal counsel, area school divisions, and community partners, including Sin Barreras. The division is sharing information with potentially impacted families and communities as needed.
Albemarle County Public Schools emphasized that it does not, and will not, inquire about the immigration status of students or families. ACPS stated that student records are protected under the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) and will not be shared with government agencies unless a valid warrant or judicial subpoena is presented. The district also clarified that students and families will not be questioned, detained, or taken into custody on school property unless law enforcement presents a valid warrant for criminal charges.
