CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Tony and Emmy award-winning actor Nathan Lane will be in attendance at the 39th annual Virginia Film Festival from Oct. 21-25, the festival announced Wednesday.

During the festival, Lane will be presented with the Virginia Film Festival Visionary Award, which recognizes artists “whose culture defining body of work and enduring contributions have changed the course of modern cinema,” the festival’s release said.

Lane will also be on-hand for a 30th anniversary screening of 1996 comedy “The Birdcage,” directed by Mike Nichols and starring both Lane and Robin Williams. The screening will be followed by an in-person conversation with Lane and Ben Mankiewicz, the primetime host of Turner Classic Movies.

“Nathan Lane has that rare and magical ability to make audiences laugh while also touching their hearts,” VAFF Artistic Director Ilya Tovbis said in the release. “The Birdcage is an iconic film of courage, warmth and comic brilliance as well as a watershed moment for LGBTQ+ cinema. We are proud to celebrate this anniversary and recognize his enduring impact with the Virginia Film Festival Visionary Award.”

Lane’s acclaimed career has crossed over both stage and screen, and he has garnered praise for his roles in Broadway musicals such as “The Producers” and “Angels in America,” on television shows like “Modern Family” and “Only Murders in the Building,” and in films like “The Lion King.”

“Nathan Lane is a true visionary: an artist whose wit, emotional depth and fearless originality have made him one of the defining performers of his generation,” Tovbis said. “Thirty years after The Birdcage, his performance as Albert remains as hilarious, moving and culturally significant as ever.”
