CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Swords into Plowshares has put out a call of “request for qualifications” from artists and teams who wish to design, make, and install a new public art work from the melted metal of the former Robert E Lee downtown statue. The deadline is April 25, and the project’s aim is to transform the statue – catalyst for the deadly Unite the Right Rally in 2017 – into a new work of public art that reflects the community’s values of racial inclusivity, beauty, and healing. A jury of professional artists, architects, curators, designers, and Charlottesville community members will select up to five semi-finalists from the pool of applicants… and each semi-finalist team will receive $10,000 to develop a specific proposal outlining their unique vision.
