CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA. (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Virginia’s senior U.S. Senator Mark Warner announced the passing of his and wife Lisa Collis’ eldest daughter, Madison, at age 36 on Monday.
“We are heartbroken beyond words by the passing of our beloved daughter, Madison, 36, after a decades-long battle with juvenile diabetes and other health issues,” Warner said in a statement. “She filled our lives with love and laughter, and her absence leaves an immeasurable void. We are grateful for the loving support of friends and family during this difficult time and ask for privacy as we navigate this profound loss.”
Though the family kept their daughters’ lives very private, Madison, along with sisters Gillian, age 35, and Eliza, age 32, were frequently photographed with Warner and Collis at various functions.
Warner said in 2006 he made his decision not to seek the Democrats’ nomination for President in 2008 after taking Madison on a college tour, shortly after celebrating his father’s 81st birthday.
“I know these moments are never going to come again,” Warner said. “This weekend made clear what I’d been thinking about for many weeks — that while politically this appears to be the right time for me to take the plunge, at this point I want to have a real life. And while the chance may never come again, I shouldn’t move forward unless I’m willing to put everything else in my life on the back burner.”
