CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Sunday morning services at Saint Paul’s Memorial Church were interrupted when a man began assaulting church goers, Charlottesville Police said.

At approximately 9:45 a.m., CPD received a report of an assault in progress at the church at 1701 University Avenue. Police arrived and arrested Phillip Salkowe, charging him with seven counts of assault and battery.

“We are thankful for the brave actions of the congregants who intervened quickly to prevent more serious injuries,” CPD chief Michael Kochis said in a statement.

According to a CPD release, Salkowe, stood up and began physically assaulting multiple members of the congregation during the morning service. No serious injuries were reported.
