CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – While passengers at larger airports across the nation struggle with long security lines, leading to missed flights and other travel frustrations, Charlottesville Regional Airport has been largely unaffected by the latest partial government shutdown.

“Thankfully, our wait times have not been affected by the shutdown,” CHO spokesperson Stewart Key told Cville Right Now on Friday. “Our TSA agents have been really wonderful and are still showing up to work and trying to get our passengers through as quickly as possible and just doing the very best that they can.”

Still, Key said CHO urges passengers to arrive 90 minutes before their scheduled departure times.

Key said there hasn’t been any unusual disruption to baggage service during the shutdown.

Larger airports, including hubs CHO services in Atlanta, Chicago and New York, have been heavily impacted, making customers return trips to Charlottesville far more stressful than their departures.

“The best way to handle that situation is just to know where you’re going through,” Key said. “So, if you know you’re about to go through a major hub, be very prepared. What we’re hearing from Atlanta is, not ideal in in any situation.”

When Congress failed to agree on a spending bill 42 days ago, the current partial shutdown began. It comes on the heels of a 43-day shutdown in the fall.

The current shutdown has resulted in TSA agents not getting their paychecks. Many – about 500, according to reporting by the Associated Press – have quit while others have called out sick.

But at CHO, the team of 39 TSA agents, who work in shifts of about 20, have been showing up for work, keeping the airport running smoothly.

During the fall shutdown, CHO launched a Help Hub program, where the community could donate for food and gas gift cards to support the TSA workers. That hub is running again during this partial shutdown.
