CHARLOTTSVILLE (WINA) – Albemarle County supervisors have approved an ordinance that allows speed cameras to be set up in school zones and highway work zones. Rivanna Supervisor Bea LaPisto Kirtley says one of the complaints she fields the most is illegal driving in the county. In addition, there are more walkers and bike riders to school and failure to abide by school zone speed limits puts lives at risk.
Police Chief Colonel Sean Reeves talked about monitoring vehicles between 2:15 and 4:15 one day where 25% of drivers in front of Albemarle and 16% of drivers in front of Western Albemarle were going 10-miles-per-hour or more over the school zone speed limit.
Drivers who are caught by these cameras will be mailed $100 speeding tickets.
