George W. White of Charlottesville went to be with the Lord on February 18, 2024. He was 93 years old.
Born January 20, 1931, in Holden, West Virginia, he was one of two sons of Elizabeth and Wib White. He was predeceased by his brother, Wilburn, and by his dear wife of 61 years, Ila.
A 1952 graduate of Marshall University, George had a distinguished 34-year-long career in teaching and coaching in Virginia and West Virginia. He held a master’s degree in education from American University.
George retired from Mount Vernon High School in Fairfax County in 1986. The Whites moved to Crozet, Va. in 1994 to be near their family. George loved the Lord, Ila, his family and friends, and sports, in that order. He also loved Virginia and West Virginia, the ocean, and the mountains.
He’s very thankful to Dr. S. Kurt Elward and Dr. Ray Marotta of Family Medicine; Dr. Tim Williams of Charlottesville Cardiology; and all the other doctors, nurses, and physical therapists who have cared for him over the years. He’s also grateful for the loving care of the staff at Morningside of Charlottesville and Hospice of the Piedmont.
George and Ila were members of First Baptist Church in Charlottesville for 25 years. He later became a member of Pantops Community Church (formerly Broadus Memorial Baptist). He was a Gideon for 25 years and a deacon and Sunday School teacher at Groveton Baptist Church in Fairfax County. He was a lifetime member of the National Education Association and the Virginia Education Association. His last employment was with Sleepy Hollow Nursing home in Annandale, Va. in 1993.
He is survived by two daughters, Deborah Jones (Chip) of Henrico, Va. and Dianne Vitt (Jim) of Charlottesville; five grandchildren: Lauren Misiaszek, Charles Jones, Mary Fuglie (Luke), Loretta Vitt Dubova (Ryan Plater) and Jordan Vitt (partner Amy Cesak); four great-grandchildren: Arlo Dubova, Pippa Plater, Gabriel Fuglie and Charlotte Fuglie; sister-in-law, Mary Burke White; brother-in-law Bob Horton; nephew Mark White and niece Carol White; and nieces Robin, Stephanie and Michelle.
