CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – July 12 is John Henry James Day, which commemorates the day 125 years ago that a black man arrested the day before for the rape of a white woman was abducted by an armed white mob and lynched, his body left hanging from a tree and shot multiple times.

The Albemarle County Board of Supervisors has called a special meeting to attend a hearing that Supervisor Diantha McKeel says will remove that indictment on the day called John Henry James Day. Albemarle Commonwealth’s Attorney Jim Hingeley will present a motion in court to have the indictment dismissed. The board will convene at 4 p.m. Wednesday in the county circuit court to attend that hearing.

McKeel says the public is invited, and a media briefing will follow.
