ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at approximately 3:10 PM,
Albemarle County Police Department responded to the 4000 block of Cypress Pointe Drive for a stolen vehicle and abduction. Upon arrival, police learned an unknown suspect had stolen a silver 2011 Kia Sorento, which was occupied by a 4-year-old and 2-month-old.
Approximately 20 minutes later, a community member found the two children abandoned in the area of The Colonnades (2600 block of Barracks Road). Albemarle County Police also located the unoccupied stolen vehicle in the 500 block of Burgoyne Road.
Albemarle County Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division determined a 17-year-old offender was responsible for the incident as well as other recent motor vehicle thefts in the area. On Friday, May 19, 2023, investigators arrested the 17-year-old on the following charges:
- 1-103 Endangering the life of a child (2 counts)
- 2-137 Felony destruction of property
- 2-95 Motor vehicle theft (6 counts)
The offender is currently being held at the Blue Ridge Juvenile Detention Center.

ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA – On Tuesday, April 4, 2023, at approximately 3:10 PM,
Albemarle County Police Department responded to the 4000 block of Cypress Pointe Drive for a stolen vehicle and abduction. Upon arrival, police learned an unknown suspect/suspects stole a silver 2011 Kia Sorento. The vehicle was occupied by a 4-year-old and 2-month-old, left unattended by their nanny. At 3:33 PM, a citizen called 9-1-1 to report two abandoned children in the area of The Colonnades, located in the 2600 block of Barracks Road. Albemarle County Police and Albemarle County Fire Rescue responded to the Colonnades and confirmed the identity of the children. Both children were determined to be okay and later released to their parents.
Shortly after discovering the abducted children, Albemarle County Police located the stolen vehicle abandoned in the 500 block of Burgoyne Road. Burgoyne Road is located directly across the street from The Colonnades. A search of the area was conducted, but the suspect(s) could not be located.
Albemarle County Police are asking the community’s help identifying the suspect(s). Anyone in the area of Four Seasons Drive or Barracks Road between the hours of 3 PM and 3:35 PM who observed the stolen vehicle (see photo below) is asked to call Detective Chuck Marshall at 434-296-5807 or Crime Stoppers at 434-977-4000. Callers may remain anonymous. The police department also requests anyone with in-car video footage capturing the stolen vehicle to contact the police.
