CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – An Afton man was arrested Thursday morning following a brief standoff with police, according to the Nelson County Sheriff’s social media.

The Nelson County Sheriff’s Office, with help from State Police and Augusta County Sheriff’s personnel, arrested Michael Wayne Scott on charges of abduction, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, possession of a firearm after having been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, and reckless handling of a firearm.

Scott was taken to the Albemarle Charlottesville Regional Jail where he was being held without bond.

Deputies were dispatched to a home at 2323 Afton Mountain Road shortly after 7:30 a.m. Thursday for a welfare check, after a neighbor reported hearing screaming coming from the home. Deputies arrived and, as they approached the home, they heard a gunshot from inside. Police established a perimeter around the home and, short time later, a woman came out the front door, uninjured, according to the NCSO release.

She told them Scott was inside in possession of firearms, and he had been not allowing her to leave. As tactical units arrived, Scott came out of the house and surrendered peacefully. Law enforcement executing a search warrant found four firearms inside the home.
