CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Tuesday is, finally, primary day in Virginia, the date pushed  back to August voting due to the redistricting referendum held in April.

The 5th District, which includes Albemarle County and Charlottesville, has three contested elections on the ballot. While incumbent Democratic Sen. Mark Warner is running unopposed for his party’s nomination, a trio of Republicans are vying for the chance to unseat the third-term Senator.

Kim Farrington is a Northern Virginian business owner. Bert Mizusawa is a retired U.S. Army Major General and Pentagon official. David Williams is a Navy and Marine veteran and Northern Virginia businessman.

Both parties have candidates vying for the nomination for the House of Representatives seat currently held by Republican Rep. John McGuire. McGuire is facing a primary challenge from former Marine turned real-estate broker Melanie Lucero. Lucero said she got into the race because McGuire was failing to represent the district. She called her fellow Republican “divisive,” “a puppet,” and “a huge disappointment.” 

The favorite on the Democratic side of the raise is former 5th District Congressperson Tom Perriello. Perriello is facing primary tests from author and journalist, and former Tea Party member, Rob Tracinski and Lynchburg doctor Suzanne Krzyzanowski. Tracinski has focused his campaign on what he calls President Trump’s abuses of power and the Constitutional questions they bring to the fore.

  • Polling places are open from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday. Voters who are in line by 7 p.m. are eligible to vote.
  • Voters must have identification. Acceptable forms of IDs include a driver’s license, DMV-issued ID card, U.S. military ID and U.S. passport, among others.

  • Applied for a mailed ballot but want to vote in person? Bring your ballot to your polling place, hand it to an election official who will void the ballot, and you will get a new ballot to mark and scan into the voting machine.
