CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Albemarle County Public Schools will hold a special School Board meeting before the start of the new school year to discuss the parameters of a third-party review and investigation “related to recent events in the division,” it announced Tuesday.

On June 4, Hollymead Elementary staffer Michael Swiney was arrested on charges of sexual misconduct involving children. Since then, Superintendent Dr. Matthew Haas and Hollymead Principal Joe McCauley have both resigned, and politicians including Rep. John McGuire, State Sen. Creigh Deeds, and Delegates Katrina Callsen and Amy Laufer have called for the division to launch an outside investigation of the circumstances.

“We know families want clarity, and we’re moving as quickly as we can while doing this responsibly,” the division said in its announcement.

Outside legal counsel will help define the scope and steps of the review to “ensure it does not interfere with any active law enforcement investigation,” the release stated.

The School Board’s response has been focused on the approval of a new policy clearly defining guidelines for staff and student interactions, especially one-on-one meetings.

The meeting, which will be held before the division’s Aug. 12 start of school date, will be used to discuss “the scope, cost and structure” of the investigation. The division plans to announce the date and time by the end of this week.

The division is dealing with a number of issues.

On March 2, Nicholas J. Clark, a fifth grade teacher at Woodbrook Elementary School, was arrested and charged with possessing child pornography and distributing child pornography, both felonies.
