CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A Charlottesville coffee shop will be celebrating Pride Month while serving looks and coffee with drag queens and guest baristas Jackie Of All Trades and Darling Nikki behind the bar Sunday, raising money for local non-profit Fight Like a GRRRL.
“I’ve always had this kind of idea in the back of my head,” said Jordan Kessler, owner of Tribute Coffee. “Wouldn’t it be fun to have drag queen baristas?”
Tribute Coffee is a specialty coffee shop that runs on a living wage system, paying their employees by using the Living Wage Calculator developed by MIT. While Tribute Coffee operates as a no tipping coffee shop, it is customary in LGBTQIA+ culture to tip drag queens and tips will be accepted at the event.
20% of gross sales on Sunday between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., will be donated to Fight Like A Grrrl (FLAG). The non-profit organization offers free self-defense workshops across Central Virginia with a goal to help create a world where everyone can walk without fear. In the past two years, demand for FLAG workshops has skyrocketed.
“Any proceeds would go to offering more workshops and training more instructors to expand our capacity to teach more people and be accessible to everyone,” Jamie Hale, treasurer and assistant instructor of Fight Like a GRRRL said.
Tribute Coffee is located at 1932 Arlington Blvd #8 in Charlottesville. Kessler said to look for the pink signs with a black cartoon dog on them.
Tribute Coffee has worked with other nonprofits like Rockfish Wildlife Sanctuary and Service Dogs of Virginia. Kessler told CvilleRightNow the shop has raised between $300 to $400 a day during some of its Tribute Tuesday events.
“If we expose a few people to drag,” Kessler said. “I’m all for it.”
