CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – At Caring For Creatures, every building has a purpose. Every project has a story. And now, one very special new space carries the name of a man whose kindness and compassion helped shape the sanctuary in its earliest days.
We are honored to introduce the Dan Schmidt Dog Pod.
The naming of this new dog sanctuary building recognizes the lasting impact Dan and Sandy Schmidt had on Caring For Creatures and the thousands of animals whose lives have been touched here over the years.
In the early days of the sanctuary, Dan and Sandy, along with their daughter Jessica, made the trip to Caring For Creatures on a cold Christmas evening to help founder Mary Birkholz care for a litter of puppies. What began as a single act of kindness quickly became a lifelong connection to the sanctuary and its mission.
Dan and Sandy became devoted supporters, volunteers, and dear friends to Caring For Creatures. Their compassion for animals and belief in Mary’s vision helped sustain the sanctuary through its formative years and inspired so many around them to get involved.
Today, nearly four decades later, Caring For Creatures continues that same mission of rescue, rehabilitation, adoption, and lifelong sanctuary care for nearly 200 dogs and cats at any given time.
The Dan Schmidt Dog Pod represents the future of animal care at the sanctuary. Designed with the dogs’ comfort, health, and emotional well-being in mind, the building provides climate-controlled living spaces, indoor and outdoor access, and a calmer, more enriching environment for dogs who may have experienced trauma, neglect, or abandonment.
The building itself was also created with sustainability in mind. Constructed using materials made from the equivalent of approximately 25,000 recycled plastic bottles, the Dog Pod reflects Caring For Creatures’ commitment not only to animal welfare, but also to environmental stewardship and long-term sustainability.
But beyond the structure itself, the Dog Pod is a reflection of community. It represents what can happen when compassionate people come together around a shared belief that every animal deserves safety, dignity, and love.
As Caring For Creatures continues working toward a future with four completed Dog Pods, we remain deeply grateful to everyone who has supported this journey – our volunteers, donors, adopters, and longtime friends who continue helping us write the next chapter.
And for those who knew Dan Schmidt, we hope this building serves as a lasting reminder that kindness leaves a legacy.
Every adoption, volunteer hour, and donation helps make stories like this possible – giving homeless animals the safety, compassion, and lifelong commitment they deserve.
Watch for details on the official dedication ceremony coming later this summer.
