CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Greene County Board of Supervisors appointed Marie Durrer as an interim supervisor on Tuesday night. She will hold the position until a special election can be held in November.

“We were very impressed with each person that participated, said Chair Steve Catalano.  “The interviews were great. It was encouraging that the level of interest in the issues that we as a community must deal with were consistently understood and verbalized by each applicant.”

Her appointment comes in the wake former supervisor Francis McGuigan submitting a resignation letter Jan. 21. He tried to rescind two days later, but the county contended that he could not lawfully rescind his resignation. Earlier this month, McGuigan filed a civil suit seeking to reclaim his position.

Marie Durrer is no stranger to public service. She served as the Midway District Supervisor from 2018 to last December. Durrer served as the Greene County Circuit Court clerk for almost 42 years.

The other applicants were Samuel Morris, William Zutt, Stuart Morris, Gary Lowe, Scott McGehee, James Higgins, Joshua Crider and Alex Sal.

“We arrived at our decision by applying the by applying the applicant skill set and experience to all the complex issues we anticipate over the next eight months,” Catalano said. “The most critical of issues obviously being the formulation process of a difficult budget. So again, on behalf of the board, we thank all the applicants. And I also thank the board for an efficient, expedited and transparent process.”
