CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WINA) – A man wanted for sex crimes against a 15-year-old girl in Albemarle County in 2004 is awaiting extradition in New Mexico.
Darren Wade Powell, 52, was wanted for sexual penetration of a minor. The victim, who reported the crime last year, identified him as a court-appointed counselor and the alleged offenses took place while she was under his care.
On February 23, the Albemarle County Police Department (ACPD) swore out a warrant for Powell, whose last known address was La Luz, NM. That same evening, they were notified that Powell was in custody and that the warrant had been served.
Darren Powell is listed as a social worker with the Tularosa (NM) Municipal School District.
On March 2, Superintendent W. Todd Lindsay issued the following statement:
This is an active and ongoing case.
