CHARLOTTESVILLE (WINA) – Albemarle County tactical team officers trying to apprehend and wanted suspect in Charlottesville city limits near the 250 and Emmet Street interchange shot and killed him shortly after noon Tuesday. Charlottesville Police say at about 10:05am, an Albemarle Police detective spotted a wanted suspect near the Red Roof Inn. When the detective tried to engage him, the suspect fled into a wooded area nearby and fired several rounds. More police responded, and set up a perimeter and issued a shelter in place advisory in the area.
Negotiators were brought in, but during the perimeter establishment, the suspect fled out of the woods towards a crowded parking lot. Police report several attempts trying to use nonlethal force, but the attempts were not successful. Officers report the suspect then pointed a firearm at them, and officers engaged and hit the suspect.
The suspect, identified as 44-year old Billy Sites of Albemarle County was critically injured and transported to UVa. He died a short time later.
State Police have assumed charge of the investigation, and Charlottesville and Albemarle Police say they are cooperating fully. This is an ongoing investigation; anyone with information is encouraged to call Crime Stoppers Tip Line at (434) 977-4000.
