CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – A UVA alert sent out at 3:04 p.m. reported “an active attacker with a gun reported in (the) area of Shannon Library.” It urged the community to “run, hide, fight.”
But 30 minutes later, after police responded, the school announced there was “no evidence of an attacker,” and at 4:43 the university issued an all-clear.
“After a thorough investigation, no evidence of an active shooter, attack, or threat of any sort was found on UVA property,” the school announced in a release.
Interim president Paul Mahoney sent an email to the university community Monday evening recapping the events, offering support services and thanking first responders.
“I am grateful that no one was hurt and thankful to our law enforcement officers and first responders, both from the University Police Department and from our partners in the city, county, state, and federal law enforcement, for responding quickly and thoroughly investigating the threat,” Mahoney wrote.
After the initial alert went out, University Police responded to the scene, according to 3:14 p.m. alert update.
At 3:20 p.m., Charlottesville Police confirmed they had officers at the library, as well, “assisting University Police in clearing the building.” A CPD social media post urged people to, “Please stay clear until further notice.”
The Charlottesville Fire Department announced, it “has a large presence at the UVA incident and is assisting CPD and UPD on scene. Please avoid the area until further notice.”
Then, by 3:34 p.m., the University sent out another update, saying, “At this time there is no evidence of an attacker.”
In a letter to the UVA c0mmunity, Interim President Paul Mahoney encouraged people to take advantage of resources.
“I realize today’s incident was deeply frightening and alarming. Your safety has been and will continue to be my top priority. It is also important to continue to look out for each other. I encourage you to check in with your friends and peers, and to take advantage of University support, including through Student Affairs, Human Resources, Counseling and Psychological Services, and the Faculty and Employee Assistance Program. If you or anyone you know is needing support at this time as a result of today’s Run-Hide-Fight situation, Student Health and Wellness has several resources available to support our community.”
