CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW)- Virginia football earned a statement victory against the Florida State Seminoles under the Friday night lights of Scott Stadium. A quarterback shootout between Thomas Castellanos for FSU and Chandler Morris for UVA went into double overtime, with the Hoos coming out victorious 46-38. As a result, the Hoos made their first entry into the AP Football Top 25 poll, slotting in at No. 24.
Florida State fell from No. 8 to No. 18. Virginia battles Louisville next. Kickoff is Saturday on the road at 3:30 p.m.
Women’s Soccer
Women’s soccer, still sitting firmly at No. 1 in the nation, hit the road to battle the Clemson Tigers, trying to remain undefeated. The Hoos blasted two goals in the first half, courtesy of Lia Godfrey and Meredith McDermott. One more in the second half from Allie Ross, and yet another clean sheet from the defense, brought home their ninth win of the year, finishing 3-0.
The Commonwealth Clash awaits the Hoos this Saturday, as they welcome Virginia Tech at 7 p.m. at Klockner Stadium.
Men’s Soccer
Men’s soccer, ranked No. 12 in the nation going into their match with UNC on Saturday, had a frustrating weekend. After a dominant 6-3 win over Wake Forest last week, the Hoos let the Tar Heels hang around for all 90 minutes of the match, with neither team getting the better of the other side’s defense. The match finished as a scoreless draw. Next up for the Hoos is a Wednesday evening battle with Milwaukee at 7 p.m., and a Sunday evening road test against the N.C. State Wolfpack at 7 p.m.
Field Hockey
The No. 3 field hockey team tangled with the California squads on the road. Virginia won both games, seeing off California 3-2 on Friday, and managing a shutout against Stanford on Sunday 2-0.
Volleyball
Volleyball hosted the ACC’s two California teams at John Paul Jones Arena, an annual event that has grown in popularity, but the visitors prevailed. No. 3 Stanford took care of business against the Hoos 3-1, and Cal echoed their in-state rivals by beating Virginia by the same count. The Hoos head back over to the Aquatics and Fitness Center, for a match against Boston College Friday 7 p.m. and a Sunday battle with Syracuse at 1 p.m.
Cross Country
Cross Country, both the No. 6 men’s team and the No. 18 women’s team were at the Gans Creek Classic in Missouri over the weekend. Gary Martin debuted for the fall season in dramatic fashion, finishing ninth in the 8K, and three more Hoos finished in the top 30, earning a second-place finish overall for the men.
Meanwhile, two Hoos finished in the top 25 in the Women’s 5k, Tatum David and Gillian Bushee, earning a fourth-place finish for Virginia.
Next up, the Hoos host the Panorama Farms Invitational on Oct. 17 in Charlottesville.
Women’s Golf
No. 18 women’s golf finished fourth in the Canadian Collegiate Invitational in Toronto last week. Jaclyn LaHa was the top Cavalier finisher, wrapping up play in fifth place. This week, the Hoos are playing in Illinois at Northwestern University for the Windy City Collegiate Classic.
Tennis
Both Virginia tennis teams were in action in their respective ITA All-American Tournaments, with the men’s team in Tulsa, and the women’s team in Cary, North Carolina. Of the many talented tennis players the Hoos sent to both tournaments, junior Dylan Dietrich finished as a semifinalist in the Men’s tournament.
His stellar finish earned him an invitation to the NCAA Individual Championships in Orlando beginning Nov. 18. The other Hoos will have two more shots at making Orlando, at the ITA Atlantic Regionals in Blacksburg in mid-October, and ITA sectionals in Chapel Hill in early November.
