CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Two people are dead after a home intrusion led to a stabbing on North Valley Pike (Route 11) on Sunday.

The Rockingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to an emergency call at 11:58 p.m. reporting a home invasion with an armed intruder in the 13000 block of North Valley Pike, according to a release from the Rockingham County Sheriff’s office.

Deputies arrived to find Michael Hatcher, 65, outside the residence. Hatcher, who was identified as the caller and the owner of the home, was suffering visible injuries sustained during the invasion and subsequent altercation. The armed intruder, Kevin Moses Walker, 42, of Pikesville, MD, was found in the driveway and determined to be deceased.

Deputies then entered the home and found the body of Holly Hatcher, 62, the wife of Michael Hatcher.

It was determined that Walker had entered the home armed with a large knife and fatally stabbed Holly Hatcher. Walker then proceeded to attack Michael Hatcher with the knife. The altercation continued outside the home, where Michael Hatcher was able to retrieve a handgun from his vehicle and fire a single shot, killing Walker.

“This investigation is still ongoing with RCSO and VSP both working very hard on discovering all of the facts and highly unusual circumstances involved in this violent and tragic crime,” said Rockingham County Sheriff Bryan in a statement. “Out of respect for the privacy of the victim’s family, no additional details will be released. Upon consultation with Commonwealth’s Attorney Marha Garst this morning, there will be no charges filed due to the offender being deceased.
