CHURCHVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Augusta County Sheriff Donald Smith is commending a homeowner for “courage and composure” in holding a suspect that broke into his Churchville home at gunpoint after a short foot pursuit as law enforcement arrived. The sheriff’s office accuses 19-year old Staunton resident Gianni Rocco Colavita of breaking into a home on Farm View Lane shortly after 10:30 last Saturday night, and the homeowner walked in on him. The homeowner retrieved a handgun and the suspect in a bedroom jumped through a screen door, unsuccessfully attempted to steal the homeowner’s car to get way, then fled on foot. The homeowner followed and detained the suspect in a field until deputies arrived.

Smith said, “This incident serves as a reminder that responsible firearm ownership can play a critical role in personal and home defense. When used lawfully and safely, firearms can be an important tool in protecting one’s family and property.”

Colavita was transported to the Middle River Regional Jail where he faces a half-dozen charges. Click here for Sheriff’s Smith’s full story.
