RICHMOND, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – UPDATE 6/18 11:05AM: Former Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney has conceded the Democrats’ Lt. Governor nomination to Ghazala Hashmi. In a statement, Stoney congratulates Hashmi saying, “I’m incredibly proud of the campaign we ran and the many Virginians who supported our efforts to fight for a fair shot for all Virginians. Unfortunately, in this primary we came up a little short. But the fight for a fair Virgnia continues. I ask all my supporters to rally behind Senator Hashmi and the entire Democratic ticket so we can continue the fight back against the Trump Administration and complicit Republicans like Glenn Youngkin, Winsome Sears, and John Reid.”
UPDATED 6/18 7:40AM TO ADD THE SPANBERGER STATEMENT:
Heading late into the night, the Associated Press was calling the Democratic primary for Attorney General for former Norfolk Delegate Jay Jones over Henrico County Commonwealth’s Attorney Shannon Taylor. Just before 11PM, Jones vote tally was headed toward 51% for a narrow majority. Jones would be the Democrats’ nominee against Republican incumbent Jason Miyares in November.
The Lt. Governor’s nominating race to face Republican and former radio talk show host John Reid remained in doubt heading into the 11 o’clock hour, though Chesterfield County State Senator Ghazala Hashmi opened up a nearly 4000 vote lead in the six person race over Richmond Mayor Levar Stoney, and nearly 6000 votes more than Virginia Beach State Senator Aaron Rouse, a former Virginia Tech and former NFL player. Although the AP had not called the race, Hashmi was proclaiming victory.
Charlottsville voters went two-for-two voting for the winners, while Albemarle hit 50-percent. The city went 43-percent for Hashmi, well ahead of the 2nd-largest vote getter, Levar Stoney, at 21-percent. In Albemarle, 38-percent went for Hashmi with 22-percent for Stoney. However, in the Attorney General’s race, Albemarle went to Shannon Taylor at 51-percent to Jay Jones’ 49-percent. City voters pretty comfortably picked the winner, Jones, at 54-percent to Taylor’s 46.
The Attorney General’s race was a clash between two UVA alums with Jay Jones and UVA Law grad, and Shannon Taylor with an international relations undergrad degree as a Wahoo.
In a Wednesday morning statement released by the Democrats’ nominee for Governor, who did not face a June 17 primary:
Congresswoman Abigail Spanberger, Senator Ghazala Hashmi, and Delegate Jay Jones today released the following statement on the 2025 election following Hashmi and Jones securing their respective nominations — reiterating their focus on putting Virginia’s families, schools, and jobs first.
“As the Democratic ticket running to serve as Virginia’s next Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Attorney General, we are united in our focus on the issues that matter to our fellow Virginians. Over the coming months, we will be relentless in communicating our vision for making Virginia more affordable, making Virginia’s public schools the best in America, protecting our Commonwealth’s economy, and defending Virginians’ rights. That’s the leadership Virginians deserve.”
The Republican ticket of Winsome Sears for Governor, John Reid for Lt. Governor, and Jason Miyares for Attorney General has not released a joint statement since their nominations have been known.
