Charlottesville, VA (cvillerightnow.com): The Charlottesville TomSox suffered a painful loss on Saturday night to the Waynesboro Generals, 11-9.  C’Ville did begin the weekend with a solid 8-2 victory over the Staunton Braves but the hot hand did not last.

It did not start out well for the Sox in the second game of the weekend, with the visitors putting up nine runs in the first two innings, including six in the second inning.  In a frame that saw 12 generals come to the plate, outs did not come at a plentiful supply, all six runs were unearned, as defensive errors and miscues put the Sox down 7-0 after two frames.

The TomSox answered quickly for the home crowd in the bottom half of the second, with an Andrew Mannelly double and a Kaegan Costa sacrifice fly.  Addison Stockham entered the game in relief for Charlottesville and quieted the Generals’ bats down to allow the Sox to find their rhythm and find it they did in the fourth.  10 hitters came to the plate for the home team, their turn to bat around, with the rally stoked by Mannelly, Tanner Schaedel, and Wahoo star James Nunnalee making his TomSox debut.  Five runs crossed in the salvo, evening the game at 7.

Waynesboro upped their total to 9 with a two run fifth, but the Sox kept pace to tie the game in the seventh.  Andrew Mannelly’s third hit of the ballgame sailed over the right field wall to cut the lead to one, and a bases loaded walk from Patrick Niehus tied the game once again at nine going into the final two frames.

Once again though, C’Ville’s pitchers could not keep the visiting offense quiet, and a two-run single in the 8th gave them another slim advantage.  This time however, there would be no answer.  Jim Douthat shut the door for the Generals and the Sox lost the heartbreaker by a score of 11-9.
