CULPEPER (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – VDOT says work crews will begin patching secondary rural and residential roadways in Albemarle, Greene, and Madison counties this week as part of ongoing efforts to improve driving conditions and prevent further roadway deterioration. VDOT leaders say patching is a critical step in maintaining roads, but it differs from full paving. While patching strengthens damaged areas and enhances safety, it is not a complete resurfacing. Drivers may notice that patched sections are not the same color as the rest of the roadway, and surfaces may not be perfectly smooth or uniform.

Many, but not all, of these secondary roadways are on the paving schedule for 2026. Patching can occur up to a year before paving for several reasons. It helps prevent further damage by sealing cracks and potholes, reducing water infiltration that can weaken the road base. Patching also stabilizes deteriorated sections to ensure a stronger foundation for future paving.

VDOT says drivers should expect minor delays in work zones across the three-county area. Please drive with caution when traveling through patched areas. Patching will extend from April 1 through Sept. 30. Local updates about conditions in VDOT’s Culpeper District are posted to X.com/VaDOTCulp and the Culpeper District Facebook page. For questions or to report hazardous road conditions, the public should contact VDOT’s 24-hour Customer Service Center by visiting my.vdot.virginia.gov or calling 800-FOR-ROAD (367-7623).
