CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The University of Virginia’s swimming and diving program may discontinue its diving component as part of a broader effort to adapt to the evolving financial landscape in college athletics.

UVA Athletics confirmed Tuesday that the program is reassessing its structure in response to the pending House v. NCAA settlement and other pressures, which are prompting changes to staff and roster decisions. The department said it is considering the “divestment of certain areas, including diving at this time,” as it prioritizes investments aimed at national championship competitiveness.

“The UVA swimming and diving program will continue to assess how to strategically invest resources to compete for NCAA championships,” the statement reads. UVA added that its athletics department will “remain nimble” in order to stay competitive on the national stage.

Head coach Todd DeSorbo, who has led the program to national prominence, will not be commenting on the changes, according to the university.
