ALBEMARLE COUNTY, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Scores of local Latinos gathered in front of the Wawa on Seminole Trail to protest the deportation of undocumented immigrants from Mexico as well as other countries in Central and South America.

They’re especially worried about ICE raids and the possible separation of families.

Some of the demonstrators waived flags or held signs. Many who drove by blew their horns to show support.

“I feel like it has been a pretty good turnout to support our purpose, just to make people aware that we are here to speak for those who can’t,” said one protester.

Some on hand were not born in America, while many were. A constant theme was pride in the hard work of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central and South America who have committed no crimes and worked hard to succeed.

“We got to live here together, because if we deport everybody, what are Americans going to do?” he asked. “They can’t do everything themselves, I promise you.”

The protest was peaceful, with a police presence across the street. When asked, none of the demonstrations were uncomfortable or resentful. Several said that they appreciated having the officers nearby, as it made them feel protected.

Many hoped that there will be more demonstrations in the days ahead.
