CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLERIGHTNOW) – The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) now accepts Virginia-issued mobile driver’s licenses (mIDs) at security checkpoints equipped with digital ID readers nationwide. Virginia residents who download the Virginia Mobile ID app to their smartphones can use it as a secure digital version of their driver’s license or ID card. This provides an alternative to presenting a physical ID and boarding pass during TSA screening.

To enroll, individuals must have a valid Virginia driver’s license or ID card and download the Virginia mID app from the Apple Store or Google Play. Travelers are advised to carry a physical ID or passport as a backup.

The digital IDs are currently accepted at more than 230 airports equipped with TSA credential authentication technology units. These units verify the traveler’s identity and confirm same-day ticketing without requiring a boarding pass, though one is still needed at the airline gate. The system also captures and matches a real-time photo of the traveler, which is deleted after clearance.
