Charlottesville VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – Camp Holiday Trails, a renowned camp in Charlottesville dedicated to young people with medical challenges, marks 50 years of empowering children to embrace their youth. Dr. Robert Selden, one of the camp’s founding physicians, shared insights on the journey that began in 1973 with a vision inspired by similar camps for kids with medical needs. Reflecting on its origins, Dr. Selden remarked, “It’s like a Broadway play… act after act after act,” describing the dedication and community effort that built the camp from the ground up.

Initially inspired by a visit to a cystic fibrosis center in Albany, New York, Dr. Selden realized that Charlottesville could create a similar supportive space. With the help of community donors and support from local contractors, Camp Holiday Trails became a safe haven for children with cystic fibrosis, diabetes, and respiratory challenges. “Everything worked out so perfectly. I just think there was some divine intervention,” he reflected on the camp’s growth and success.

The anniversary of Camp Holiday Trails highlights the ongoing commitment to helping children thrive despite medical challenges. As the community celebrates its impact, Dr. Selden emphasized the importance of continued support to keep the camp accessible for future generations.
