Charlottesville, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – In a heartfelt interview, Kayla Wynn, a volunteer with the Alzheimer’s Association, shared her impactful journey of leading a support group for millennial caregivers. Wynn, who has been involved with the organization for six years, spoke about the unique challenges faced by younger caregivers, particularly those in the “sandwich generation,” who balance caring for both children and aging parents.
“We really quickly had to learn what that life was going be like,” Wynn recalled, describing the moment when her mother-in-law was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia shortly after she and her husband married. She emphasized the importance of having a support network during such challenging times: “It felt very isolating… At that time, I wished we had had a support group like the one I’m currently leading.”
The virtual support group Wynn facilitates emerged during the COVID-19 pandemic and continues to provide a safe space for millennial caregivers nationwide. Participants connect, share their experiences, and lean on each other as they navigate the complexities of caregiving.
The group is open to anyone interested, and more information can be found on the Alzheimer’s Association website. Listen here for the full conversation:
