CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The National Weather Service has issued a Flood Warning for the Rivanna River at Palmyra, impacting Fluvanna County, with the warning extended through Wednesday morning due to anticipated minor flooding.
As of Monday morning, the river’s water level was recorded at 13.8 feet, and it is expected to rise above the flood stage of 17 feet late this afternoon (Monday). Forecasts predict the Rivanna River will crest at 18.4 feet by early Tuesday afternoon before receding below flood stage by early Wednesday morning. At 18 feet, flooding is expected to affect the Palmyra town boat launch and the Crofton Boat Ramp upstream.
Residents are advised to take precautions as flooding of roads and low-lying areas is possible. Motorists should avoid driving through flooded areas, as most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for Fluvanna County and surrounding areas, including Amelia, Goochland, and Louisa counties, until midnight tonight. Additional rainfall this evening may exacerbate flooding risks, especially in flood-prone locations.
