CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – City Council Monday night agreed to the concept of funding Habitat for Humanity and Piedmont Housing Alliance’s purchase of the Carlton Mobile Home property. The organizations have asked the city to help fund up to $8.7-million over 5 years toward purchase of the property. City Redevelopment Manager Brenda Kelley said no actual money is committed right now, and the newly formed Habitat Carlton Alliance would have to pay some money back if the city fails to appropriate funds in any year.

The $8.7-million comes in the form of a 40-year term forgivable loan. Future City Councils will need to  appropriate the money during the annual budget process, and failure one years of Council to do so revokes the loan agreement, and HCA would have to pay back any funds expended.
The new development will have at least 180 units, 70% of which will be affordable for low or moderate income persons.
