CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – The Fall 2024 NCAA sports season is heating up as mid-September approaches. UVA sports fans have already experienced plenty of excitement across multiple teams, from Soccer and Field Hockey to Volleyball and Football. Here’s a roundup of an action-packed weekend in UVA Athletics, featuring a historic football victory, a women’s soccer winning streak, and the continued pursuit of excellence by UVA’s nationally ranked field hockey team.

UVA Football secured its first road win at Wake Forest since 2002, breaking a five-game losing streak against the Demon Deacons. After a season-opening victory over Richmond, many analysts expected Saturday’s game to be a major test for the Cavaliers, who are looking to rebound from a 3-9 season in 2023. Tony Elliott’s squad rose to the challenge, coming from behind to win 31-30 in a hard-fought contest. Next, the Cavaliers will host their longtime rivals, the Maryland Terrapins, who are 1-1 on the year after a close 27-24 loss to Michigan State. Kickoff is at 8:00 PM on September 14 at Scott Stadium, with coverage on Newsradio WINA and streaming on the ACC Network.

The UVA Women’s Soccer team took to the pitch on Sunday for Mental Health Awareness Day at Klockner Stadium, defeating the Howard Bison 4-0. The Cavaliers, now 7-0 on the season, dominated the game from the start despite a strong performance from Howard’s goalkeeper, Trinity Knox. The Hoos will begin ACC play on Thursday, facing Miami on the road. The Hurricanes are 3-1-1 after recent wins against FIU and Southeastern Louisiana. Kickoff is at 7:00 PM on ACCNX.

In Men’s Soccer, UVA faced a tough challenge in their ACC opener against Duke on Friday. The match was decided by an own goal, with the Blue Devils winning 1-0. UVA will look to rebound against Wake Forest in Winston-Salem on Friday, September 13, with kickoff set for 7:00 PM on ACCNX. Wake Forest, coming off a 3-1 loss to Gardner-Webb, will face Radford today before taking on the Cavaliers.

The UVA Volleyball team hosted the Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gym over the weekend. The Hoos started with a 3-0 loss to Coastal Carolina but bounced back on Saturday with a 3-1 victory over Hofstra. The Hoos then won a rematch against Coastal Carolina in a thrilling five-set match, 15-13 in the final set. Next, UVA will compete at the Liberty Tournament, where they’ll face ETSU, West Virginia, and Liberty from September 12-13.

UVA Field Hockey returned to action on Friday with a dominant 7-0 victory over Temple in their home opener. The team followed up with a 2-1 road win against No. 11 Liberty on Sunday. Jans Croon’s late goal sealed the victory for the No. 3-ranked Cavaliers. Next, the Hoos will travel to College Park, Maryland, for matchups against No. 4 Maryland on Friday and American on Sunday.

On the international stage, UVA Women’s Golf triumphed at the Pan-Pacific UGSL Tournament in Japan. Amanda Sambach led the way, finishing 9-under for the tournament, helping UVA secure a team victory. The Men’s Golf team will be in action at the Inverness Intercollegiate in Toledo, Ohio, on September 9-10.

UVA Cross Country will also compete at the Virginia Invitational this Saturday at Panorama Farms in Earlysville.
